Revilla Alternative School - School-to-Work Program

Revilla Alternative School serves the needs of over 150 students, elementary through high school. The school-to-work program objective is to provide students opportunities to explore careers and make informed decisions about career choices, complete on-line interest assessments, practice and develop job readiness skills, access career information and knowledge, research and identify sources of employment, education, and career opportunities, and successfully complete an internship and/or gain employment.

Juniors and seniors take the Alaska Career Information System IDEAS (Interest Determination, Exploration and Assessment System) profile, SKILLS rating (Holland Personality Types), and the Interest Profiler to explore careers. Seniors are asked to complete a cover letter, resume, and references sheet. Workshops provided by Ketchikan Job Center include job readiness tips, resume planning, application preparation, job interview skills, and mock interview practice with community members. Representatives from Alaska Ship and Drydock, Ketchikan General Hospital, GCI, Safeway, and Alaska Works Partnership provide students with educational and vocational insight as they present career and apprenticeship opportunities available locally and statewide.

Revilla staff would like to extend an invitation to all interested agencies and employers seeking to promote local career opportunities for our students. Please phone (907) 225-6681 to schedule a workshop or presentation with the students.

Ketchikan Youth Initiatives - Youth to Work Program

Ketchikan Youth Initiatives is working in conjunction with Boys and Girls Club, Southeast Alaska Independent Living,UAS, Revilla High School and the Ketchikan Job Center to serve the needs of our community members ages 14-24. The Youth to Work program objective is to educate youth by teaching them basic job skills. These are skills that would carry throughout any career choice, skills such as punctuality, problem solving, conflict resolution, appropriate dress, grooming techniques, and many other much needed basics to assist our young workers to be a more valuable part of our local workforce.

We also provide a interest assessment, after we take a good hard look at the result of the assessment we then place our youth in a 4-6week work experience and a job site that matches their interest. The key part of this program is that while our youth are on their job site we mentor them by keeping in touch with both the employer as well as the youth, This way we are insuring that the youth are understanding as well as learning about how do become the best employee they can be. Most of youth end up doing such a good job that they go on to be hired by the job site.

We are seeking interested employers as well as interested youth, If you are interested in being a part of this program on any level please contact Jesse at youthtowork@gmail.com or call 228-3236. leave a message and we will get back to you.

Alaskan Trivia:
Alaska’s only poisonous berry is the baneberry. Eating as few as six berries can cause sickness in healthy adults, and as few as two berries can kill a child. Fortunately, the berry has a very bitter taste and is not very likely to be eaten anyway. Baneberry grows from Southeast Alaska through the Kenai Peninsula, on Kodiak Island, in Bristol Bay and along much of the Yukon River. The plant grows up to 3 feet tall.
